Farming in Windrose is unlocked by collecting Fertile Soil from Ancient Farms on Foothill islands, building a Seedbed from the Farming tab (B key), planting seeds, and waiting for crops to grow. Later, you can automate farming by purchasing the Farming Contractor in Tortuga for passive resource production.

If you still learning the basics of Windrose, then feel free to check our complete basic guide out here.

How to Start Farming in Windrose

If you’ve been picking up seeds while exploring, you might be wondering how to actually begin farming. The process is straightforward once you know where to gather the right materials and how to prepare your land.

Farming allows you to create a renewable source of resources, which is extremely useful for crafting, cooking, and long-term progression.

How to Get Fertile Soil in Windrose

Your first step is acquiring Fertile Soil.

To find it, sail southeast to a Foothill island. While exploring, look for points of interest labeled Ancient Farms. These areas contain patches of soil that can be mined.

Equip your pickaxe and break apart the ground to collect Fertile Soil. Gather as much as you can carry, as you’ll need multiple placements to build a proper farm.

How to Build a Seedbed

Once you return home with Fertile Soil, you’re ready to prepare your farm.

Press B to open the build menu (Building Panel).
Navigate to the Farming tab.
Select the Seedbed and place it on your plot.

The Seedbed is required for most crops in the game and acts as the foundation for your farming setup.

How to Get Seeds in Windrose

Seeds are obtained naturally while exploring.

Whenever you harvest wild plants across the islands, there is a chance you will also receive that plant’s seed. For example, harvesting wild flax may reward you with a Flax Seed.

Because seeds are tied to exploration, it’s worth gathering every plant you see early on.

All Plantable Crops in Windrose

There are currently two categories of plantable crops.

  • Seedbed Plants: These must be planted in the fertile soil of your seedbed.
    • Peppers
    • Batata
    • Bean
    • Leek
    • Tomato
    • Corn
    • Flax
    • Cocoplum
  • Ground Plants: These larger plants can be placed directly on the ground anywhere on your plot.
    • Shrub
    • Ficus
    • Palm

Note: As Windrose is currently in its alpha stage of development, this list is subject to change, and more plant varieties may be added in future updates.

How Planting and Harvesting Works

Once you have seeds, press B again and return to the Farming tab. Select the seedling you want to plant and left-click on your Seedbed to place it.

There is no watering mechanic. Crops grow automatically over time.

When fully grown, walk up to the plant and press E to harvest it. You will receive the crop resource and your seeds back, allowing you to create a continuous farming loop without needing to constantly rediscover seeds.

Farming Contractor Guide (Advanced Farming)

After reaching Tortuga, you unlock a more advanced option: the Farming Contractor.

You can purchase the contractor from the Recruitment Vendor for 10 gold coins and place them at your home.

Once you have placed the contractor, you can interact with the farming bench and see that the NPC requires you to bring 50 seeds of a plant and 20 silver coins.

Using this service is extremely useful, as within 8 hours, you can interact with the farming bench again to get your 50 seeds back, as well as heaps of the resource that you needed.

What is great about this service is that the farmer will work passively while you are not playing and also does not interrupt your own personal crops that you are growing.

Farming in Windrose is one of the most important long-term progression systems in the game. Once established, it provides a steady supply of materials and reduces the need for constant exploration runs. As the game continues through alpha development, expect additional crops and farming features to expand this system further.
