Where to Find Coal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
Coal can be found throughout the Fellhollow region in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but the best and most reliable location is a cave just northeast of Silverthorn Keep, where large amounts of coal spawn in a safe, threat-free environment, making it ideal for farming coal needed to smelt steel bars.
With the Fellhollow region introduced in the Ashenfall 0.10.1 update, coal has become a key progression resource. While coal does spawn across many areas of Fellhollow, not every location is efficient or safe to farm. After testing multiple spots, the cave near Silverthorn Keep stands out as the best location and is the one we recommend using.

What You Need Before Mining Coal
Before heading out to gather coal, you must first make sure you have an Iron Pickaxe. This is the highest-tier pickaxe available before the Fellhollow update and is required to mine coal nodes.
We also strongly recommend bringing one or two Lodestones with you. Each Lodestone costs 32 stone, 20 rune essence, and 1 vault core to craft. Coal nodes respawn over time at a good rate, but placing a Lodestone nearby allows you to teleport back and forth quickly, saving a significant amount of travel time between farming runs.

Best Coal Location in the Fellhollow Region
Coal can be found all across the Fellhollow region, including mountain paths and cliff edges. However, the most efficient location we’ve found is near Silverthorn Keep, which is located in the eastern part of Fellhollow.

Once you arrive at Silverthorn Keep, head toward the northeastern side of the area. On the map, you’ll see the keep icon, and just below it you’ll find a cave entrance. Inside this cave, coal spawns in large clusters, and the entire area is completely free of enemies, making it one of the safest coal farming locations currently available.

Coal can also be found along the cave walls, so be sure to mine those as well. In addition to coal, the cave contains granite, and there are several iron nodes just outside the entrance, making this a very efficient multi-resource location.

How to Efficiently Farm Coal
Before entering the cave, place a Lodestone nearby so you can return easily. Once inside, loot the chest found in the cave, as it respawns over time and is worth collecting on each visit.

Use the Rocksplosion ability on the largest clusters of coal first. Since Rocksplosion has a 45-second cooldown, it’s best used on the biggest groups to maximize efficiency. After that, use your Iron Pickaxe to mine any remaining coal throughout the cave.

Because the area is completely safe and coal respawns at a solid pace, this location is ideal for repeated farming runs with minimal downtime.

Additional Coal Locations in Fellhollow
If you still need more coal after clearing the Silverthorn Keep cave, you can explore further north toward Coalridge Pass. By sticking to the right side of the mountain range, you’ll find additional coal nodes scattered along the cliffs.
That said, for most players, the Silverthorn Keep cave provides more than enough coal for steel production and early progression, which is why it remains our top recommendation.

How to Smelt Steel Bars
Once you’ve gathered enough coal, use your Lodestone to fast travel back to your base and head to your Blast Furnace. Time to begin smelting steel bars. Steel can be created using either of the following methods:
- 1 x coal, 1 x iron bar, and 1 x charcoal to create 1 x steel bar
- 1 x coal, 3 x iron ore, and 1 x charcoal to create 1 x steel bar
Both methods produce the same result, allowing flexibility depending on your available materials.

What Steel Unlocks
After smelting steel bars, you’ll unlock new crafting recipes, including the steel pickaxe, steel axe, and tier 5 weapons and armor. This marks the next major step in progression introduced with the Fellhollow update.
