ArcheAge Chronicles

ArcheAge Chronicles is a big Unreal Engine 5 game, and it asks a lot of your PC. You need at least 16 GB of RAM, an 8 GB graphics card and 100 GB of SSD space just to meet the minimum requirements. On top of that, it's an action game where dodges and parries depend on timing, so a steady frame rate matters more than in a typical MMO.

This guide covers the official system requirements, what to expect from your hardware, the best settings for smoother performance, and fixes for common problems like the black screen on first launch. Once you're running smoothly, use MetaForge's interactive map and skill tree planner to plan your adventure.

ArcheAge Chronicles System Requirements

Minimum requirements (30 FPS at 1080p, Low settings)

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600

  • RAM: 16 GB

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER or AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8 GB VRAM)

  • DirectX: Version 12

  • Storage: 100 GB, SSD required

  • Target: 30 FPS at 1080p on Low, with upscaling set to Quality

Recommended requirements (60 FPS at 1080p, High settings)

  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5700X

  • RAM: 32 GB

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB or AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT (12 GB VRAM)

  • DirectX: Version 12

  • Storage: 100 GB, SSD required

  • Target: 60 FPS at 1080p on High, with upscaling set to Quality

What the requirements really mean

  • Both targets assume upscaling. Even the recommended specs only aim for 60 FPS at 1080p with upscaling on. If you play at 1440p or 4K, expect to need more powerful hardware or more aggressive upscaling.

  • An SSD is mandatory. The game is built around a seamless open world that streams in as you move. On a hard drive you can expect stutter, slow loading and missing textures, which is why XLGAMES lists an SSD as a requirement, not a suggestion.

  • Video memory matters. 8 GB of VRAM is the minimum. If your card has exactly 8 GB, keep texture quality modest to avoid stutter.

  • RAM matters too. 16 GB is the floor and 32 GB is recommended. Close browsers and other background apps before you play if you're on 16 GB.

  • Windows only. Early Access is on Steam for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). There are no console versions yet.

Before You Play: Install and Launch Checklist

  1. Install on an SSD with room to spare. Set aside the full 100 GB, plus some extra space for future updates.

  2. Update your graphics drivers. Install the latest NVIDIA, AMD or Intel driver before launch. New Unreal Engine 5 games often get driver-level fixes around release.

  3. Accept the anti-cheat. The game uses XIGNCODE3, a kernel-level anti-cheat that installs alongside it and has its own end-user agreement.

  4. Be patient on the first launch. The first time you start the game, you may see a black screen for 5 to 10 minutes while it prepares. Don't close it straight away. Wait up to 10 minutes before you contact support.

Best Settings for ArcheAge Chronicles

These settings are a good starting point for smoother performance, especially on mid-range PCs. Start here, then raise the quality one setting at a time until you find the right balance.

Upscaling and frame generation

  • Always use upscaling. The official requirements assume it. If you have an NVIDIA RTX card, DLSS is your best option.

  • Pick the right mode. Quality looks best and is what the official specs target. If you're below your target frame rate, try Balanced, then Performance.

  • Try frame generation if your GPU supports it. It can make the game feel much smoother, especially in busy areas. It adds a little input latency, so turn it off if parries start to feel late.

Graphics settings

  • Shadows: Medium. Shadows are one of the most expensive settings, and Medium still looks good.

  • Motion blur: Off. It costs performance and makes fast combat harder to read.

  • Camera shake: Off. This won't change your FPS much, but it makes heavy hits and big fights much easier to follow.

  • Textures: Match them to your VRAM. Use lower settings on 8 GB cards and higher settings on 12 GB or more.

  • Everything else: Start on the preset that matches your hardware (Low for minimum specs, High for recommended), then fine-tune from there.

Comfort and control settings

  • Smooth camera rotation. XLGAMES added a smooth camera rotation option before launch. Try it if the camera feels jerky.

  • Consider a controller. The game fully supports controllers, and combat feels very natural on one. Mouse and keyboard work fine too, so pick whichever feels better for parries and dodges.

Fixing Common Performance Problems

Black screen on first launch

This is a known issue and usually resolves itself. Leave the game running for up to 10 minutes. If it's still black after that, verify the game files in Steam, update your graphics drivers and try again before contacting support.

FPS drops in busy areas

Channels hold about 100 players per zone, so towns, camps and field boss fights can get crowded. If your frame rate drops in busy spots, lower shadows first, then switch upscaling to a faster mode or turn on frame generation. Switching to a quieter channel can also help.

Stuttering

Make sure the game is installed on an SSD, not a hard drive. Lower texture quality if your graphics card has 8 GB of VRAM or less, and close background apps if you have 16 GB of system RAM.

Crashes and disconnects

XLGAMES fixed several startup errors, disconnects and login issues before Early Access launched, and dungeon progress now survives a disconnect. If you still crash, update your drivers, verify your files in Steam, and restart the game after long sessions if performance gets worse over time.

Lag in combat

Not every hitch is a frame rate problem. If enemies seem to teleport or your hits don't land, the cause is probably network latency. Check which server you're on, because your server choice is permanent during Early Access.

Performance FAQ

How big is the ArcheAge Chronicles download?

Set aside 100 GB of SSD space. The Steam Next Fest demo was a 38.1 GB download and only included one region, so the full Early Access game is much larger.

Can I run ArcheAge Chronicles on a hard drive?

No. An SSD is part of both the minimum and recommended requirements.

Does ArcheAge Chronicles run on Steam Deck?

The game only lists Windows support, and its hardware requirements are well above what the Steam Deck offers. It also uses kernel-level anti-cheat, which often causes problems on Linux. Don't buy it expecting it to work on Steam Deck.

Can I run it with 16 GB of RAM?

Yes, 16 GB is the minimum. Close other programs while you play for the smoothest experience, as 32 GB is recommended.

Will performance improve during Early Access?

Early Access is expected to last 9 to 12 months, and XLGAMES has already shipped performance and stability fixes based on test feedback. Expect more optimisation updates before full release.
