Guild Wars 3 Gamescom Demo: Everything Confirmed So Far
ArenaNet showed roughly 15 minutes of Guild Wars 3 gameplay behind closed doors at Gamescom, with no video released to the public. It is the largest batch of concrete detail since the game was announced for PC and PlayStation 5, with betas beginning in fall 2027.
The build shown was pre-alpha, narrated by studio director Colin Johanson while developers played on both controller and mouse and keyboard. Everything below has been discussed by creators who attended Gamescom and should be read against that, since several systems were described as still in iteration.

It is a true open world MMO, not an MMO lite
The single biggest question going in was scale: Guild Wars 3 is a genuine open world MMO, not a wholly instanced game in the style of the original Guild Wars, but it does land somewhere between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 on the scale spectrum.
The devs quoted 20 players as the number that they are aiming for to be participating in an encounter at any one time. To accomodate this, their server tech makes heavy use of phasing. This doesn’t mean that there is a strict limit of 20 players per map, but objectives may be split in ways that this makes sense, and phasing balances the numbers.
Towns and cities are exempt and will hold far more players at once. Boss difficulty also scales to the number of players present, so encounters adjust rather than requiring a fixed group size.

Movement and momentum drive the combat
Movement is the pillar the demo was built around. Gliding, wall running, climbing, sliding, and leaping chain into one another without a landing animation between them, across a world seamless enough to cross without a loading screen.
Momentum is the mechanic tying that to combat. Attacks launched with speed behind them, such as dropping onto an enemy from a wall run or a glide, hit harder and can carry larger area effects.
Terrain is an active weapon. You can knock enemies into walls to stun them, kick them off ledges, and be knocked into walls yourself if you position badly.
Combat also leans on enemy weaknesses rather than raw damage checks. One demo encounter featured spiders vulnerable to fire, where a fire buff on your weapon both cleared their webs and made them far quicker to kill.
Conditions stack cumulatively instead of sitting in a buff bar. Repeated freeze application slows a target progressively until it is encased in ice, and bosses are not immune to these effects.

Professions and clearer roles are back
Professions are confirmed, ending speculation about a classless system. Warrior and necromancer were played in the demo, and rangers were mentioned as well.
Roles are the notable change. Guild Wars 3 will ship with clearer tank, healer, and DPS roles from the start, rather than adding them over time as Guild Wars 2 did.
Those roles stay flexible, with different professions filling different roles depending on the skills in your build. ArenaNet framed this as closer to the original Guild Wars than to Guild Wars 2.

GW2 vs GW3 comparison
| System | Guild Wars 2 | Guild Wars 3 as described |
|---|---|---|
| Combat style | Tab target with action elements | Action combat with lock on, no precision aiming |
| Players per encounter | Large scale, well beyond 20 in World versus World | Around 20, higher in towns and cities |
| World structure | Zones separated by loading screens | Seamless, including instance entry and exit |
| Roles | No fixed trinity at launch | Tank, healer, and DPS defined from the start |
| Conditions | Stacking icons in a buff bar | Cumulative, shown visually in the world |
| Large scale PvP | World versus World | Not planned |
PvP, Raids, 4th species
PvP is confirmed to exist in some form, but the modes are not. World versus World and large scale PvP are not currently planned for Guild Wars 3, and ArenaNet was clear that Guild Wars 2 continues to support that style of play through its world boss and meta event rotations.
Raids were implied as expected MMO content without a hard confirmation, and crossplay between console and PC is confirmed. The full profession list, weapon and armor systems, and skill counts are all unknown, and the interface on display was a placeholder.
The fourth playable species also remains secret, following the studio’s published approach to playable species. For the confirmed platform, setting, and beta details, see the official Guild Wars 3 site and our Guild Wars 3 announcement breakdown.

Frequently asked questions
Is Guild Wars 3 a real MMO? Yes. It is a shared open world where you encounter other players you have not grouped with, not an instanced lobby game.
How many players can fight together? Around 20 in a single encounter in the current build, with higher counts in towns and cities.

When can I play it? Betas begin in fall 2027 on PC and PlayStation 5.
