How to Complete the Hidden Critter Quest in Farever
The Hidden Critter Quest in Farever sends you on a hunt for a Yellow Leggybug tucked away in a cliff cave under Hivetree’s Canopy, and getting there means buying a butterfly net, finding a quest giver in Honeywood, and dropping off the Western edge of a giant tree. It’s a Critter Quest from H. Catchum in Greenhorn Forest, and the route is genuinely one of the more satisfying hidden spots in the early game. Here’s exactly how to do it.
Hidden Critter Quest Overview
Before you head out, here’s the quick rundown of what you’re getting into. The Hidden Critter is a Critter Quest tied to H. Catchum, and the catch target is hidden in a cave you can only reach by jumping off a tree. You’ll need a net before you start, otherwise you’ll make the trip for nothing.
- Quest Giver: H. Catchum, found at the Honeywood Obelisk in Greenhorn Forest.
- Zone: Greenhorn Forest, with the catch location sitting under Hivetree’s Canopy in the Honey area.
- Objective: Catch the Yellow Leggybug (the in-game ladybug critter) hiding in a cliff cave below the giant tree.
- Required Tool: A Large Butterfly Net, sold by the Guild Merchant near the Primevalley Obelisk for 150 Gold.
- Rewards: 100 Gold and 20 Spark Dust, plus the Yellow Leggybug becomes an equippable companion that follows you around.
How to Get a Bug Net for the Hidden Critter Quest
You can’t catch anything without a net, and the easiest place to grab one is back in Primevalley. Head to the Primevalley Obelisk and look for the Guild Merchant standing nearby. Open their trade menu and buy the Large Butterfly Net – that’s the tool you’ll use to bag the Yellow Leggybug later.
Keep it in your inventory and don’t equip it yet. The net takes up an active slot, so you’ll want to swap to it only when you’re ready to swing. If you’ve already got one from another critter quest, you’re good to go. Once you’ve got the net, fast travel over to the Honeywood Obelisk and we’ll start the quest properly.

Where to Find H. Catchum and Pick Up the Hidden Critter Quest
H. Catchum hangs out at the Honeywood Obelisk, so once you’re there, talk to him to grab the Hidden Critter Quest. His description is pretty cryptic – he tells you to climb the giant tree, head as far west as possible, then jump – but the actual route has a few twists he conveniently leaves out.
Quick orientation when you spawn at the obelisk: the obelisk is on your left, and the giant tree (this is Hivetree’s Canopy) is right in front of you to the north. That tree is your destination. Don’t worry about the deep cave entrance you can see at the base – that’s not where we’re going.

How to Reach the Hidden Cave Under Hivetree’s Canopy
This is the part that trips people up, so we’ll take it step by step. The cave sits on a tiny island below the canopy, and the only way in is to drop down from the top of the giant tree. To get to the top, you’ll work through a jumping puzzle that’s tied to the Forest Jump quest from Haydn Seek. It’s worth doing both at the same time since the routes overlap.
Step 1: Head North and Take the Right-Hand Path
From the Honeywood Obelisk, walk north toward the giant tree. Instead of going into the deep cave at the base, veer slightly to the right and follow the path through the trees. You’ll pass some bees on the way, so be ready for a quick scuffle if they aggro on you.

Step 2: Complete the Bee Bumper Jumping Puzzle
The path leads you to a jumping puzzle made of bumpers, bee platforms and flowers. The bumpers fling you from one to the next, into a flower, then onto more bumpers and bee platforms higher up. You’ll need to complete the full course in order to get all the way up the Tree. If you’ve already done this puzzle, you can go back to this first rotating cube, interact with it and it will teleport you all the way to the top.

Step 3: Drop One Level Down to the Western Edge
Once you’re on the western edge of the top platform, drop down one level. You should now see a pink or purple bee boss in the area along with a waterfall – those are your landmarks confirming you’re in the right place. You’re now on the middle level of the tree, still on the west side.

Step 4: Position Above the Small Island and Jump
Walk to the very edge of this middle level, lining yourself up so you’re directly above a small island below. This is the second drop. Look down and you’ll see roots sticking out of the cliff face, more roots beneath those, and a small flower marking the entrance. That’s the cave. Drop straight down, hugging the edge, and you’ll land on the little island. The flowers around the entrance are also gathering material for another quest, so grab them while you’re there.

How to Catch the Yellow Leggybug
Once you’re inside the cave, look for the Yellow Leggybug crawling around the upper edge of the room. Most of the time it spawns on a small set of stairs near the back, slowly making its way up. It’s bright yellow and unmistakable against the dark cave background.
Equip your Large Butterfly Net (it’ll replace your weapon in the active slot), line up the swing on the bug, and hit it. The catch isn’t always perfect on the first try – the swing has a bit of a hitbox quirk and you can miss even when you’re right on top of it, so just keep swinging until it lands. Once it’s caught, the Yellow Leggybug becomes a companion you can equip from the Collections menu under Companions.
You don’t have to keep the net equipped after the catch – swap back to your weapon and head to the nearest obelisk to fast travel back to Honeywood. Talk to H. Catchum and the quest wraps up, netting you 100 Gold and 20 Spark Dust.

Bonus: Ladybug Mount Chest in the Same Cave
While you’re in the cave, don’t sleep on the chest tucked inside. It’s a separate reward from the Hidden Critter Quest, but the chest can drop a Ladybug Mount – one of the more sought-after early-game mounts in Farever. Loot it before you leave even if you’ve already caught the bug, since you’re already there and the trip back is a bit of a slog.

Tips for the Hidden Critter Quest in Farever
1. Grab the Net Before You Travel
The number one mistake is heading to Honeywood, doing the whole route, then realizing you don’t have a net. Buy the Large Butterfly Net from the Guild Merchant in Primevalley first. It’s a small detour that saves you the entire round trip later.

2. Stack Hidden Critter With Forest Jump
The jumping puzzle that gets you to the top of the tree is also the route for Forest Jump from Haydn Seek. Pick up both quests before climbing and you’ll knock them out together without doing the puzzle twice.
3. Use the Teleport Square Every Time
Once you’ve completed the jumping puzzle the first time, the teleport square at the top stays usable. If you ever need to come back to this area (for the chest, the flowers, or other quests), you don’t have to redo the puzzle.

4. Reload if you can’t find the Ladybug
If you found the quest but the ladybug is nowhere to be found, perhaps someone just caught it before you. Go back to the Main Menu and load back into the game, this should put you in a new instance and hopefully LeggyBug will be crawling around in the cave this time!
5. Don’t Worry About Missed Swings
The bug net swing can feel a bit off, and missing your first couple of swings on the Yellow Leggybug is normal. The bug doesn’t run, doesn’t despawn, and isn’t going anywhere. Just reposition and swing again until it lands.

6. Loot the Chest Before You Leave
Always open the chest in the cave even if the Ladybug Mount drop is rare. The trip back is involved, and the cave is far enough off the beaten path that you don’t want to come back for one piece of loot you forgot.
