Use a Millstone to craft 5 units of Homemade Gunpowder. You’ll need:
- 25 Sulfur
- 25 Ash
Where to Find Sulfur
Mine Sulfur on the Foothills Islands—these islands also have Flax and Iron Ore, but mining Sulfur manually can be slow.
Unlocking the Miner NPC later in the game lets them gather Sulfur passively and efficiently.
How to Get Ash
To make Ash, burn wood in the Charcoal Kiln. It’s one of the easiest resources to obtain, as long as you have access to wood and a Kiln.

Alternative Method for Ammo Early Game
Before you have access to the Miner NPC, farming Sulfur can be time-consuming. A more practical approach early on is to target Pirate Camps located in the Foothills area.
Of course, you will still need to craft bullets, but that’s the easy part — it’s the Homemade Gunpowder that’s the challenge.
Defeating the pirates and looting the chests they guard can provide you with easy access to Homemade Gunpowder and other resources. These camps respawn over time, making them a reliable and repeatable source for gathering materials.
Crafting Bullets at the Weaponsmith Table
Once you have Homemade Gunpowder, head to the Weaponsmith Table to craft bullets. Here’s what’s available:
Stone Bullets
- 5 Bullets crafted from 3 Stones
- Easily obtainable and the most practical ammo choice until the later stages of the game
Iron Bullets
- 5 Bullets crafted from 1 Iron Ingot
- Provides a 25% boost to projectile damage
- A good damage upgrade once Iron becomes readily available
Bone Shot
- 5 Pellets crafted from 5 Bones
- Fires 6 pellets, each dealing 30% of the weapon’s base damage (slash damage)
- Damage decreases over distance, making this option best suited for close-range combat
Enchanted Bullet
- 1 Bullet crafted at high cost
- Changes the damage type to Pierce
- Increases standard shot damage by 10%
- Increases critical hit damage by 20%
