ARC Raiders Reveals the “Expedition Project”: A Genius Solution to Wipes?

In the world of extraction shooters, one rule has always been king: Wipes. A full, mandatory reset that brings everyone back to square one is the standard for the genre. Some games experimented with voluntary Prestige systems, but they present a problem of imbalance where a newly prestiged player is dropped back into full geared lobbies. So, when Embark Studios announced that their highly anticipated extraction adventure, ARC Raiders, would have no mandatory wipes, the community was left with one massive question: How?

Speculation ran wild. Would there be high-stakes faction wars? Impossible endgame raids to act as gear sinks? Well, the wait is over. Embark has just dropped a bombshell of a blog post, revealing their innovative solution: a voluntary seasonal reset system they’re calling the Expedition Project. Let’s break down exactly what this means for us, Raiders.

Arc Raiders Wipe System Philosophy: Respecting Your Time

Before diving into the “how,” Embark’s design director, Virgil, explained the “why.” They see the benefits of a fresh start – a reset economy and a level playing field – but they also acknowledge a major downside:

“…one thing a mandatory wipe does not do is respect the investment of those players who do not have as much time to play overall.”

Their goal is to create a system that works for both the hardcore grinders and the more casual players. Instead of just copying what other games do, they’re experimenting to find a solution that best suits ARC Raiders and its community. This is a bold move, and it’s what makes the Expedition Project so exciting.

How the Expedition Project Works

The system is brilliantly woven into the game’s lore. Once you’ve mastered the Rust Belt, you can choose to join an “Expedition” – a one-way trip beyond the known borders. Here’s the mechanical breakdown:

  • Unlock at Level 20: Once your character hits level 20, you’ll gain access to a new feature called “Projects,” with the first major one being the Expedition Project.
  • An 8-Week Cycle: The Expedition Project operates on a repeating 8-week cycle (think of it like a season). During this time, you’ll contribute resources and complete objectives to progress through the project’s multiple stages.
  • The Commitment Window: During the 8th and final week of the cycle, a window opens up. If you’ve completed all the project’s stages, you can choose to “commit” to the Expedition.
  • It’s 100% Voluntary: Even if you complete the project, you don’t have to commit. You can change your mind and keep all your progress. But if you do commit, your character “leaves on the Expedition” at the end of the week, and you start fresh.
  • Progress is Saved: If you don’t finish the project in one 8-week cycle, your progress carries over to the next one. You’ll never lose the work you’ve put in.

The Big Question: What Do You Keep vs. What Do You Lose?

This is the most critical part. With Arc Raiders wipe system Embark has drawn a very clear line.

What You Lose:

  • All character-specific progress: Your level, skills, inventory, stash, workshop upgrades, and crafting capabilities will be completely reset.

What You Keep:

  • Everything account-based: All cosmetics (whether earned or purchased), achievements, rankings, and anything involving real money is safe and sound.

For convenience, Raiders who complete an Expedition will also get to skip most of the initial tutorial and onboarding steps, getting them back into the action faster.

The Incentives and Benefits of Arc Raiders Wipe System

So, why give up all your hard-earned gear? Embark is planning some powerful incentives, but they’ve made one crucial promise: completing a reset will never give a player a direct power or combat advantage over someone who hasn’t. The rewards will focus on cosmetics, quality-of-life, and bragging rights. Here’s what we can expect:

  • Unique Seasonal Cosmetics: Each Expedition will offer exclusive cosmetic rewards you can’t get anywhere else. Imagine unlocking a unique execution animation that gets more elaborate with every season you complete. It’s not a combat advantage, but it’s the ultimate flex.
  • Temporary Account Buffs: For the duration of the next 8-week cycle, your account will receive a buff. This could be something like a small XP boost to help you level up faster on your next run. These buffs will also get stronger with each consecutive reset you complete (up to a limit).
  • Permanent Account Unlocks: This is huge. Each completed Expedition will grant you permanent, account-wide unlocks. While not confirmed, this could mean things like a permanent increase to your stash size, a new safe pocket, or even a permanent discount with a specific trader. These are meaningful progression rewards that respect your long-term investment.

Our Take: A Genius Wipe System That Could Change the Genre

The Expedition Project feels like a brilliant solution to a problem that has plagued extraction games for years. It creates a space where everyone can play together. Hardcore players get their regular “wipe day” experience and exclusive rewards to chase, while casual players can progress at their own pace without ever having their hard work erased against their will.

It also gives Embark an incredible tool to guide the game’s economy. If a certain map area is being ignored, they can simply make a required material for the Expedition Project spawn there, instantly creating a new hotspot. It’s a dynamic system that could keep the game feeling fresh and unpredictable for a long, long time.

This commitment to trying something new and respecting all types of players is exactly what could allow ARC Raiders to break into the mainstream. It’s a risky experiment, but it’s also a genius one, and we can’t wait to see it in action.
