Runescape Dragonwilds

RuneScape: Dragonwilds left Early Access on September 15, 2026, seventeen months after its first playable build. The 1.0 release adds console versions, crossplay, a new end-game region, and the Dragon gear tier that the survival sandbox has been building toward since launch.

This is the biggest single drop the game has had, and it changes enough that returning Early Access saves will feel unfamiliar in places. Below is what shipped, what it means for your current world, and where to spend your first session.

If you want to track any of it while you play, the Metaforge RuneScape: Dragonwilds homepage has the map, database, and guides in one place.

What launched on September 15

The 1.0 build is a full release, not another Early Access milestone. Jagex shipped it simultaneously on PC and console rather than staggering the console versions.

The headline additions are the Scorned Wilderness region, the Regicide quest, Rune and Dragon armor tiers, wands as a new magic weapon type, and full crossplay. Underneath that sits a combat overhaul and a large stability pass, with 2,665 bugs logged and fixed across the development period.

Every platform and the crossplay setup

Dragonwilds is now on five storefronts across four platforms. The PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, Jagex Launcher, and Steam listings all went live together.

  • PlayStation 5: full release, listed on the PlayStation Store
  • Xbox Series X and Series S: full release, listed on the Microsoft Store
  • Nintendo Switch 2: full release, the first RuneScape survival title on Nintendo hardware
  • PC: available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Jagex Launcher

Crossplay works across all of those, and worlds are joined using invite codes rather than platform friend lists. That means a Switch 2 player and a Steam player can share the same world without either of them linking accounts through a third-party service.

On Steam the game is listed at $29.99 for the standard edition and $39.99 for the Deluxe Edition. Console and Epic pricing is set per storefront and is worth checking against your own region before buying.

Scorned Wilderness and Kuldra, the God-Eater

The Scorned Wilderness is the 1.0 end-game region and the home of Kuldra, the God-Eater. It sits at the top of a boss roster that now runs from Dragon General Velgar through Imaru the Revenant Dragon, the Black Knight Titan, the Kalphite Queen, Fuzan the Fire Dragon, and the Kot’Haar obsidian golems.

Regicide is the new quest tied to this part of the world. Exactly how entry to the region is gated is TBC until it has been walked through in-game, so treat any progression order you see on launch day as provisional.

The world of Ashenfall is large enough that the end-game regions are easy to wander into underlevelled. The RuneScape: Dragonwilds interactive map carries both a Surface layer and a Dowdun Underground layer, which is the faster way to work out where a region sits relative to your base before you commit to the trip.

How combat changed in 1.0

Combat in 1.0 is closer to an action game than the Early Access build was. Three changes carry most of the weight.

  • Sprint Attacks: sprinting into an attack opens with a unique strike rather than your standard swing
  • Special Attacks: these now draw from a dedicated bar and hit harder than the old implementation
  • Animation cancelling: you can interrupt your own attack mid-swing to dodge or block

Parrying was reworked alongside this. A successful parry restores 50% of your max stamina and opens the target to a Visceral Attack, which turns defensive play into a damage opportunity instead of a pause.

The spell list grew too, with Water Enchantment, Enfeeble, Vengeance, and Runic Refund all added. Runic Refund grants a 30% chance to preserve your runes on cast, which materially changes how sustainable high-tier magic is over a long fight.

Quality-of-life changes returning players will notice first

The 1.0 pass touched a lot of small friction points, several of which were long-running community requests. These are the ones you will feel inside the first ten minutes.

  • Storage Ledger: sorts items into the right containers automatically instead of by hand
  • Home Teleport: a Runecrafting spell that returns you to base without a constructed portal
  • Faster base loading: building system optimization cuts the load time on large bases
  • Controller remapping: primary attacks moved to R1 on PlayStation and RB on Xbox
  • Camera deadzone: you can move within the center of the screen without dragging the camera
  • Ava’s Accumulator: silenced, after sustained player feedback about the noise

Menu navigation was also fixed for both controller and mouse and keyboard, tooltips scroll, and the quest sidebar collapses. Level-of-detail handling across the world was improved, which mainly benefits the console builds and lower-spec PCs.

Switch 2 performance figures, specifically resolution and frame rate targets, are TBC and should be verified on hardware rather than assumed from the PC build.

From Early Access to 1.0

Dragonwilds shipped six substantial updates during Early Access. If you stopped playing at any point, this table shows what you missed and where your save left off.

Update windowHeadline additionsGear ceiling
April 2025 (Early Access launch)Brynmoor and Ghornfell regions, 9 skills, Dragon General VelgarIron
June 2025Expanded Magic skill tree, Palisade WallsIron
September 2025Ranged abilities, Custom and Creative world modesIron

March 2026Dowdun Reach region, Fishing skill, Dedicated ServersSteel

September 2026 (1.0)Scorned Wilderness, Regicide, crossplay, console release, combat overhaulDragon

The skill list now stands at ten: Attack, Ranged, Magic, Mining, Woodcutting, Construction, Artisan, Runecrafting, Farming, and Fishing. Farming arrived with Fellhollow and Fishing with the March 2026 update, so a save from Early Access launch will be missing both skill trees entirely.

Where to start on day one

Your first session should look different depending on whether you have an existing world. The two paths diverge quickly.

If you are new to Dragonwilds

Start in Brynmoor and work the original nine skills before going anywhere near the newer regions. The game front-loads survival pressure, so Mining and Woodcutting into a basic shelter matters more than chasing a quest line in your first hour.

Set your Home Teleport as soon as Runecrafting allows it. Losing an hour walking back to base is the single most common early-game time sink, and 1.0 removed the need to build a portal for it.

If you are returning from Early Access

Relearn combat before you relearn the map. Sprint Attacks, the Special Attack bar, and animation cancelling change your opening exchanges enough that muscle memory from the March 2026 build will get you hit.

Then audit your storage. The Storage Ledger only helps if your containers are labeled sensibly, and a Dragon-tier crafting run needs materials you may have scattered across half a dozen chests.

What is coming after 1.0

Luminance is the next major update and is scheduled for winter 2026. It brings a new building kit and further features, with the developers signalling that Magic is due for adjustments.

On the community side, 1.0 introduced a moderation system with human-reviewed reports, and a Twitch Badge campaign runs until October 4 for anyone watching 30 minutes of Dragonwilds coverage. Specific Luminance patch content is TBC until the update notes are published.
