The dwarves know that the earth has a memory, gemstones especially so. What they don’t tell you, is that the earth holds a grudge. Each time a pick pierces the stone or smashes a piece of ore from its home, the earth remembers.
A skilled enchanter can use that grudge, that earthen memory, and turn it back against the grudge-filled earth. Traditionally this is done via jewellery, with dwarven goldsmiths making most of their living from miners purchasing these trinkets.
