To solve the first riddle in Tales of the Shire, you need to find a specific tree stump. Here are the key details:
- The Riddle Text: “In the eye of the lake, there stands a tree. And in its roots, you’ll find what you seek.”
- Where to Go: Head to the lake in the southern part of the Bywater map, located just east of Cotton Farm. Look for a small island in the middle.
- The Solution: On the small island, find a hollow tree stump. Interact with the shimmering blue sparkles at its base to solve the riddle.

The riddle quests are given to you by a young hobbit, Daisy Took, who needs help solving them. The riddles are written by Nora Burrows as a creative way to help Daisy with her reading lessons. This questline encourages you to explore Bywater by interpreting metaphorical clues rather than just following a map marker. To begin the first riddle quest, “Eye of the Lake,” you must first increase your friendship level with Daisy Took.
How to Solve the First Riddle: “Eye of the Lake”
Solving this riddle is a test of observation. The key phrase, “eye of the lake,” is a literal clue. If you look at your map, you will see the southern lake has a small island in its center, making it look just like an eye with an iris. The second clue, “there stands a tree,” is a bit of a misdirection; you are not looking for a full tree, but a distinctive hollow tree stump on that island. Once you cross the small bridge to the island, locate the stump and interact with the shimmering blue sparkles at its base to complete the quest.
