ArcheAge Chronicles rewards players who explore, read the world and manage their stamina, not players who grind mobs. This beginner's guide covers what to do before you log in, how to pick a class, how combat and progression work, and the tips and tricks that will save you hours in your first week of Early Access.

Chronicles is a $29.99 buy-to-play action RPG from XLGAMES, set on Auroria about 50 years after the original ArcheAge. It is not a remake, and it plays nothing like the old tab-target MMO. Keep MetaForge's ArcheAge Chronicles hub open while you play: the interactive map, skill tree planner and database answer most questions faster than trial and error. New to the game entirely? Start with Everything We Know About ArcheAge Chronicles.

Before You Start

Three decisions are hard to undo, so make them before you create a character: your server, which character gets the pre-order outfit, and where you install the game.

  • Agree on a server with your group first. Friends on different servers can never play together during Early Access, and XLGAMES has only said it "may review" transfers later. Our server guide helps you choose.

  • Claim the pre-order Dawn Pioneer Set on your main. It works on one class, on one character, and cannot be moved. Hold Claim Reward on the main menu (or hold N), then open the chest from your inventory. Preview the outfits in the costumes database.

  • Be patient on first launch. A black screen for 5 to 10 minutes can be normal. Wait it out before contacting support.

  • Demo progress does not carry over. Everyone starts fresh, and Early Access is planned to run 9 to 12 months, so there is no need to rush.

Choosing Your Class

Pick the class whose two weapons you enjoy, not the one a tier list ranks highest. No tested Early Access tier list exists yet, and you switch between your two weapons mid-fight with Q, so you play both. There are no races to choose; each class is tied to one gender in Early Access.

Warrior

Male

Longsword: parry-and-counter duelist with leaps, roots and a stun

Greatsword: builds Resolve for shields, super armor and Armor Break

A forgiving melee start with strong parries

Ranger

Female

Longbow: ranged kiting, Rapid Fire, Fire and Ice Arrows

Hatchet: lightning melee with dodges built into skills, can parry

Range and mobility, with a melee fallback

Berserker

Male

Axe & Shield: bleed, moving block, Reel In pull, Battlecry heal

Warhammer: the biggest single hits, burn and shock

A durable frontliner who supports the party

Mage

Female

Elemental Staff: fire and lightning AoE, stores spells with Retain

Wavesword: melee frost spellblade with an Ice Crystal counter stance

Area damage and a close-range spellblade

Not sure yet? Pick by the weapon you want to play most:

  • Defensive melee: Longsword or Axe & Shield

  • Big, slow hits: Greatsword or Warhammer

  • Ranged damage: Longbow or Elemental Staff

  • Fast dodge-and-combo melee: Hatchet

  • Freezing spellblade: Wavesword

Things to know before you commit:

  • Only the Longsword and Hatchet can parry. If you want parry-based combat, play Warrior or Ranger.

  • There is no healer at launch. The Mage's Vitality Staff is planned for later; for now, healing comes from consumables and skills like the Berserker's Battlecry.

  • Demo players found the Warrior and Ranger smoother than the Mage and Berserker. XLGAMES has retuned weapons since, so treat that as a starting point, not a verdict.

  • Third weapons and gender options are coming. A female Warrior and the Warrior's Gladius (sword and shield) arrive in December. The Crossbow, Greatshield and Vitality Staff follow later, and every gender lock goes by full release.

For a deeper breakdown, read ArcheAge Chronicles Best Class for Beginners. Compare weapon stats in the weapons database and sketch a build in the skill tree planner before you spend your first trait points.

Combat and Progression Basics

Combat is real-time action, and stamina is the resource that keeps you alive. Light and heavy attacks sit on the mouse buttons, and you can jump, roll, dash, block, parry and optionally lock on. Attacks and dodges draw from the same stamina bar, so emptying it on offence leaves you unable to escape. Attacks that flash red are unblockable: dodge them. A successful parry usually opens a counter-attack. A controller is fully supported, and many demo players preferred it.

Exploring Auroria and Life Skills

Early Access covers three regions, Diamond Shores, Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains, with 300 to 400 things to find in each zone. Quest markers are sparse: many quests start when you stumble onto a place, and some NPCs only mark a location after you talk to them. Track your finds on the interactive map.

What to look for as you explore:

  • Nui Statues: checkpoints, fast travel, max-HP upgrades and the place to switch channels. Activate every one you pass.

  • Raeven's Coilstones: boss-guarded trait points for your weapons.

  • Hersander's Towers: riddles that ask for an offering found in the same zone. Solving one gives accessories and unlocks a timed Hereafter Challenge against a stronger zone boss.

  • Chests: looted once per character, so you never race other players for them. Check behind waterfalls.

  • Field bosses and Crimson Rift events: gear, accessories and rare materials. See drop tables in the creatures database.

You earn a glider through questing, and some areas continue underwater. Mounts have not been confirmed.

Life Skills, Crafting and Housing

Life skills cover hunting, gathering, farming, crafting, housing and trading. The demo let you chop wood, mine, skin, pick berries and cook potions; housing, farming and trade make their first public appearance in Early Access, so expect details to settle over the first weeks.

  • Gather on the move. Pick up materials along your quest route instead of making dedicated trips.

  • Keep unfamiliar materials. Check what they craft in the materials and recipes databases before you sell them.

  • Learn cooking and crafting as they unlock. Consumables matter more without a healer class. Browse the consumables, crafting, crafting stations and tools databases.

  • Housing is shared, not instanced. Homes persist across channels and act as social hubs, and test menus showed crafting stations for them. See the housing database.

  • Trade routes need defending. XLGAMES says trade runs cross dangerous ground. Previews suggest the original game's pack theft is gone, but that is not confirmed.

Grouping, Channels and PvP

PvP is opt-in, so you can level without ever fighting another player. Each zone runs on channels of about 100 players, and every channel is either Peace or Conflict.

Conflict (PvP)

About 10 to 15% bonus XP on monster kills (demo figure); player kills give no loot

You switch channels at a Nui Statue once you leave the first town. A cooldown stops you hopping away mid-fight, so switch before trouble starts. The zone, monsters and quests are the same in both.

Players fighting a large boss in ArcheAge Chronicles

Parties hold up to four players, stay together across zones and share quest progress in instanced dungeons, which you can also solo. Parties stay together when you switch between Peace and Conflict, and invites work in both. If you can't see a friend outside your party, you are probably on different channels: meet at a Nui Statue and switch. There are no sieges or faction wars yet; an arena is planned, and XLGAMES calls PvP a major post-launch focus.

ArcheAge Chronicles Tips and Tricks for Beginners

These tips come from the October demo and the September network test, so a few details may shift in Early Access.

Combat Tips

  1. Play through the tutorial and give combat an hour or two. Many demo players said it only clicked after that.

  2. Never empty your stamina bar against a new boss. Keep enough for at least one dodge until you have learned its pattern.

  3. Watch for red attacks. They cannot be blocked or parried, only dodged.

  4. Swap weapons with Q mid-fight. Use one weapon to open and the other to finish or escape, rather than treating your second weapon as a spare.

  5. Try a controller. It is fully supported, and plenty of demo players found it more comfortable for dodging and parrying.

Levelling and Exploration Tips

  1. Quest and explore instead of grinding. Monster kills give only a fraction of your XP. Detour for ruins, points of interest and chests.

  2. Talk to every NPC. Some objectives are never marked until you do. Follow the main quest early, then branch out, because some content only opens with the right quest.

  3. Activate every Nui Statue. They are your checkpoints and fast-travel points, and you will want them later.

  4. Pick up Nui Tears as you go. Each max-HP upgrade costs more than the last, so a stockpile pays off.

  5. Hunt Coilstones, but come back to the hard ones. If a guardian boss walls you, leave and return with more levels and gear.

  6. Put your first trait points into your main weapon. Spreading thin across both trees early makes both weaker.

  7. Spend stat points every level, deliberately. Check the preview, and remember Talent raises your equipment load.

Gear and Economy Tips

  1. Compare stats, not rarity colours. A lower-rarity item with the right stats can beat a shinier one; use the gear comparison tool.

  2. Check tempering costs and failure penalties first. Don't sink materials into gear you will replace in a few levels.

  3. Don't vendor unknown materials. Look them up in the materials database before selling.

Social and PvP Tips

  1. Group up for field bosses, such as the large bear near the start. They drop gear and rare materials.

  2. Switch channels if you can't see your friends. Meet at a Nui Statue and change together.

  3. Stay in Peace channels until you are comfortable. The Conflict XP bonus only applies to monsters, so it is small.

Performance Tips

  1. Install on an SSD. It is required, not just recommended.

  2. Use upscaling. Players report better results with DLSS on Performance or Balanced, plus frame generation where supported.

  3. Turn shadows to medium and switch off motion blur and camera shake for smoother, clearer fights. See our PC performance guide for full settings.

Beginner FAQ

Is ArcheAge Chronicles good for solo players?

Yes. You can quest, explore and level alone, chests are per character, dungeons can be soloed and PvP is opt-in. Field bosses are easier in a party of up to four.

What is the best class for beginners?

The Warrior is the most forgiving start: the Longsword can parry and the Greatsword adds shields and super armor. If you prefer range, the Ranger's Longbow and parrying Hatchet are a strong pair.

How do I get stronger weapon skills?

Find Raeven's Coilstones in the world and beat the bosses guarding them. Character levels raise your stats, but only Coilstones give weapon trait points.

Can I change servers later?

Not during Early Access. Choose the same server as your friends from the start.

Is there a cash shop or pay-to-win?

No shop in Early Access. XLGAMES says later purchases will be limited to expansions, customisation and quality-of-life items, with "no pay-to-win items, ever".
