Subnautica 2 Sales Surpass 2 Million Copies in 12 Hours
Subnautica 2 sales have crossed 2 million copies in under 12 hours of Early Access launch, with peak concurrent players hitting 651,000 across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox. Unknown Worlds’ underwater sequel is now the top-selling game on Steam globally, and Xbox Game Pass numbers aren’t even included in that total.

Subnautica 2 Sales Hit 2 Million in Under 12 Hours
Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026. One hour later, Unknown Worlds confirmed the game had already sold over 1 million copies. Within 12 hours, that number doubled to 2 million.
The sales pace is staggering for an Early Access release. The game is currently sitting at the top of Steam’s global best-sellers chart and has held that spot since launch. Reviews are landing in the Very Positive range, with players praising the Unreal Engine 5 visuals, the new 4-player co-op, and the survival systems.

Concurrent Player Numbers Dwarf the Original
Player counts are the other big story. Subnautica 2 peaked at 651,000 concurrent players across all platforms. On Steam alone, the game hit 467,582 concurrent players at launch. That’s roughly nine times the all-time peak of the original Subnautica, which topped out around 51,000 back in 2018.

For a launch-day comparison, Subnautica 2 jumped ahead of Apex Legends, PUBG, and Rust on Steam’s most-played leaderboard. And remember, the 2 million sales figure doesn’t count Xbox Game Pass subscribers playing through their subscription. The real player count is significantly higher than even these numbers suggest.
What This Means for the Subnautica 2 Sales Trajectory
Going into launch, Subnautica 2 had over 5 million Steam wishlists. Hitting 2 million conversions in 12 hours suggests the momentum isn’t slowing anytime soon. With Early Access expected to run 2 to 3 years and more content, biomes, vehicles, and story chapters on the way, these numbers are likely just the starting point.

Subnautica 2 is available now on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and Xbox Series X|S, plus Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
