To unlock the Outpost in Marathon, you need to reach Runner Level 12 by completing runs, faction contracts, and successful extractions. There’s no shortcut, no keycard, and no quest – your Runner Level is the only thing gating access. Most players will get there in around 2-4 hours of normal gameplay. Outpost went live on March 6, 2026, one day after Marathon’s full release, so if you’ve been grinding since launch you may already be close. Below is everything you need to know about unlocking and surviving the Outpost in Marathon.

How to Unlock the Outpost Map in Marathon

The Outpost in Marathon requires Runner Level 12 to access. Your Runner Level goes up as you participate in runs, complete faction contracts, finish objectives, and successfully extract. Once you hit Level 12, Outpost shows up in the deployment menu alongside Perimeter and Dire Marsh.

Unlike the two starter maps, Bungie locked Outpost behind a level requirement so players would have time to learn the basics, improve their gear, and build up some experience before walking into a much tougher environment. If you’re still getting comfortable with Marathon’s core loop, there’s no rush – the map isn’t going anywhere.

Fastest Way to Reach Runner Level 12 to unlock Outpost

If you want to unlock the Outpost in Marathon as fast as possible, faction contracts are the way to go. Completing contracts gives you XP directly and feeds into faction reputation, which opens up even more high-XP objectives down the line. Here’s how to speed things up:

Pick a faction and commit to it. Choose one of Marathon’s factions: CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, or Arachne, and work through their contracts. Focused progression earns you XP faster than spreading across all factions at once.

Complete every run objective. Each run has specific objectives beyond simple looting. Finishing these gives you bonus XP on top of what you earn from the run itself.

Extract successfully. Dying means losing your gear and getting reduced XP. A clean extraction with completed objectives is the fastest XP-per-minute path to Level 12.

Play in a crew for bonus rep. Running with crewmates means you earn shared reputation when anyone in the squad completes a contract objective – even if you don’t have the same contract active. Each crewmate gets +30 Rep per objective just for being in the squad.

Solo queue and Rook mode grant a 20% reputation bonus, making them solid options if you want to level up your faction standing faster without needing a full squad.

Various Faction Ranks presented - Faction Contracts is a good way to increase your level in Marathon.

What Makes the Outpost in Marathon Different?

The Outpost in Marathon is a functioning UESC enemy facility, and it plays nothing like Perimeter or Dire Marsh. Where those maps give you breathing room and a relatively gentle difficulty curve, Outpost is hostile from the moment you deploy.

Smaller and more vertical. Outpost is significantly more compact than the other zones. The map is built around vertical layers rather than wide-open spaces, so you’ll be climbing, dropping, and navigating tight corridors constantly. Engagements happen at close range and there’s nowhere to hide for long.

Heavier UESC presence. The zone has scan drones overhead, tripwires, and weather hazards. The AI enemies are stronger and more numerous than on other maps, and they’re backed by the full security apparatus of an active UESC facility.

Better-geared players. Because Outpost requires Level 12 to access, the players you run into will generally be running stronger loadouts. Firefights here are more lethal than anything you’ll find on Perimeter.

Tips for Surviving Your First Outpost Run in Marathon

Outpost has a steep learning curve. Here are some practical tips to help you stay alive on your first few runs.

Don’t bring your best gear on the first run. Treat your initial visit as a scouting mission – learn the layout and enemy positions before risking high-value equipment. Use Standard or Enhanced gear until you know the map.

Learn the extraction points first. Before chasing loot, figure out where you can extract. Getting caught with valuable gear and no path out is the most common way to lose everything on this map. Check our Outpost Interactive Map to see where the spawn points and Exfil stations can appear.

Bring the right Runner Shell. The Assassin’s stealth kit lets you avoid the chaos around the Pinwheel, while the Destroyer’s aggressive abilities let you push through it. Pick what fits your playstyle.

Watch for tripwires and drones. These environmental hazards are unique to Outpost and can reveal your position or deal unexpected damage. Keep your eyes open, especially in corridors leading to high-value areas.

Don’t linger. Outpost is a map where speed matters. Extended looting sessions attract attention from both AI patrols and other players. Get in, grab what you need, and extract.

Coordinate with your crew. Communication is more important here than on any other map. Callouts about enemy positions, keycard locations, and extraction timing can mean the difference between a profitable run and a total wipe.

Follow Metaforge tips to dominate with your crew on the new map.
