Guild Wars 2

The double dagger elementalist build in Guild Wars 2 pairs main-hand and off-hand dagger with the Tempest elite specialization, using the Fresh Air trait to reset Overload Air’s cooldown on critical hits for a high, sustained power DPS rotation. It only requires the Heart of Thorns expansion, since dagger has been a core elementalist weapon since launch and Tempest is the elite specialization unlocked with that expansion.

The team at MetaForge tested this build against the July 14, 2026 balance update to confirm every trait, relic, and rotation detail below reflects the current patch.

This guide covers the gear, traits, skills, consumables, and rotation you need to run it, along with variations if you are not fully geared yet.

Gear and Equipment

Full berserker stats form the foundation of this build, prioritizing power, precision, and ferocity across armor, weapons, and trinkets. If your budget allows for infusions, run power infusions with one precision infusion to reach a clean crit rate breakpoint when paired with the food listed in the consumables section.

  • Runes: Use the rune of the Scholar for its damage bonus above the health threshold. If you already own a full set of Dragonhunter runes, the difference is small, but Scholar is the better pick specifically for this build.
  • Weapons: Run main-hand dagger paired with off-hand dagger. Both slots use a force sigil and an accuracy sigil.
  • Relic: Equip the Relic of Fireworks. It currently grants a 7% outgoing strike damage bonus for 6 seconds whenever you deal strike damage with a weapon skill that has a recharge of 20 seconds or more, refreshing on stack, according to the Relic of Fireworks effect page. Because your Overload skills qualify for this trigger, you can maintain the buff close to permanently.

Start with an exotic berserker set if you are not fully ascended yet, then move straight into the traits below rather than delaying your first attempts at the rotation. Once your final set is equipped, clear the leftover exotic pieces out of your bags before your next session, since our Guild Wars 2 Inventory Cleanup tool covers what’s safe to salvage or sell.

Traits

This build runs Air, Fire, and Tempest, stacking damage modifiers that all apply while you cycle through the same three attunements the rotation calls for.

Air (top line):

  • Fresh Air: Recharges your air attunement on a critical hit and grants a ferocity boost when you attune to air. This is the trait the entire build is built around, since it lets you reset Overload Air’s long cooldown through crits instead of waiting it out.
  • Ferocious Winds: Converts 7% of your precision into ferocity.
  • Stormsoul: Deals increased strike damage against disabled or defiant foes and increases your outgoing stun duration. Against bosses that never count as disabled or defiant, swap this for a different Air trait instead.

Fire (middle line):

  • Fire’s damage traits: Increase your power and outgoing damage while attuned to fire, and increase damage against burning foes.
  • Passive burning application: A minor but consistent source of extra damage layered on top of your direct strikes.

Tempest (bottom line):

  • Transcendent Tempest: Reduces the time it takes to reach elemental singularity by roughly a third, cutting the wait from 6 seconds down to around 4, and grants a 7% damage and 7% condition damage bonus for 7 seconds after you successfully complete an Overload. This shortens the gap before you can use Overload Air again after swapping back into air attunement.
  • Unstable Conduit: Grants an aura based on your current attunement whenever you complete an Overload. Because this build keeps Overload Air on a short effective cooldown, you can maintain the resulting aura far more consistently than in a standard Tempest build.

Train these three lines in the order above, then move on to your skill bar.

Skills and Utilities

Your utility bar is built to support high uptime on Overload Air while giving you flexibility for group content.

  • Healing skill, Wash the Pain Away: A group support tool that also removes conditions from yourself.
  • Signet of Fire: Left passive for its critical chance bonus rather than activated.
  • Glyph of Elementals: Cast while attuned to fire for its strongest damage effect, using the flip-over skill afterward.
  • Elite skill: Glyph of Elementals is the default pick, but you can swap it for Rebound for a defensive cooldown, or Tornado when you need heavier crowd control.

Overload Air is your single largest damage source in this build. It strikes an enemy up to 14 times and grants fury to you four times during the cast and four more times after it completes. Fire and earth weapon skills 3 through 5 fill the gaps between air rotations, with earth’s skills also acting as blast finishers for combo fields.

Consumables

Food and utility consumables round out your crit rate to hit the breakpoints this build depends on.

Rotation

The core loop always returns to air attunement so you can use Overload Air as often as your cooldown allows, since crits from your other attunements reset it through Fresh Air.

  1. Pre-cast Glyph of Elementals while attuned to fire, then swap into air attunement before engaging.
  2. Open with Overload Air, timing the final hit to land as you engage the enemy.
  3. Swap to fire attunement immediately, using your fire skills in sequence, casting your fire burst skill while the cast carries you into the next swap.
  4. Swap back to air attunement, using your instant-cast skills first, then your remaining air skills.
  5. Swap to earth attunement, using your four and five skills, or your three skill if five is on cooldown.
  6. Swap back to air attunement and repeat the loop from step 3.

Attunement swaps do not interrupt whatever skill you are currently casting, so cast a skill and swap attunements in the same motion wherever the loop above allows it. Overload Air is the one exception, since you cannot swap attunements while it is channeling, so save your other utility casts for right after it finishes.

Build Variations and Swaps

Swap Lightning Storm for a stun break, block, or reflect when an encounter’s mechanics call for it, since it is the most replaceable utility slot in the build. For large-scale meta events where tagging as many enemies as possible matters more than sustained single-target damage, swap to staff instead. Outside of those two swaps, run the core gear, trait, and skill choices above as your default across fractal, strike, and open-world content.

Ready to Bring Double Dagger into Your Next Run

You’re ready to slot double dagger elementalist into your build for fractals, strikes, or open-world content. Start in a low-pressure fractal or open-world event to build muscle memory on the rotation, then bring it into higher-pressure strikes or raids once your Overload Air timing is consistent. If you plan to farm around the biggest meta events with the staff swap above, check our Guild Wars 2 Event Timers page for current windows, though listed times are estimates and may not exactly match your server’s timing.

FAQs

Do I need Secrets of the Obscure or Janthir Wilds to play double dagger elementalist?

No, double dagger elementalist only requires the Heart of Thorns expansion for the Tempest specialization. Off-hand dagger has been a core elementalist weapon since Guild Wars 2 launched, so newer expansions like Secrets of the Obscure and Janthir Wilds add other weapons but are not required for this build.

Is double dagger elementalist good for PvP or WvW?

Double dagger elementalist is built and tested for PvE only, using Fresh Air and Transcendent Tempest values that behave differently in competitive modes. In PvP and WvW, both traits carry reduced or reworked effects, so this gear, trait, and rotation combination will underperform outside of fractals, strikes, and open-world content.

What happens if Overload Air gets interrupted on tempest elementalist?

Interrupting Overload Air still puts your air attunement on its full Overload cooldown, exactly as if you had completed the cast. This cooldown penalty applies whether the overload is cancelled intentionally or by being disabled, so time the cast around known boss mechanics rather than risking a cancelled channel.

Is double dagger or staff better for open-world farming in Guild Wars 2?

Staff elementalist tags more enemies per event than double dagger, since its skills hit a much wider area for open-world loot and event rewards. Double dagger elementalist instead favors sustained single-target and small-group cleave, making staff the better pick specifically for large-scale open-world farming and meta events.

Does skipping the precision infusion hurt double dagger elementalist’s damage?

Skipping the precision infusion leaves you slightly under a clean crit rate breakpoint, which makes Fresh Air reset Overload Air’s cooldown less reliably during phases without Fury uptime. This matters most in solo play or groups with inconsistent boon coverage, so prioritize the infusion first in those situations.
