Grounded 2

The Pond Aquatic Optical Disk in Grounded 2 sits inside the underwater lab beneath the pond, on a cart just past the entrance. You reach it by diving from the green bench area, swimming down past a white pipe, and slipping past a Toe Biter guarding the lab door.

The team here at MetaForge has tested this dive in the current build, confirming the route and the gear it requires before publishing this guide.

What You Need Before You Dive

Two pieces of gear are required to reach the lab, and neither is optional for this route.

  • Gill Tube: Lets you breathe while submerged, which you need for the full underwater stretch leading to the lab.
  • Fin Flops: Speeds up your swimming and diving so you can cover the distance before your air runs low.

Craft or equip both before you leave your base. Head to the net at the edge of the pond once you have them, since that is where the route to the lab begins.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Follow these steps in order from the net area at the edge of the pond.

  1. Start at the net handle and head toward the green bench visible across the water.
  2. Cross the pole and net to close the distance. Bugs may aggro along the way, but you can outrun most of them rather than fighting.
  3. Reach the lily pad near the pole, then jump into the water and swim toward the green bench.
  4. Swim to the tap roughly in line with the bench, then start diving down from that point.
  5. Aim for the elbow of the white pipe below the surface and follow it down.
  6. Look slightly left and down once you reach the pipe elbow. The lab entrance sits just past a large Toe Biter in that direction.
  7. Bypass the Toe Biter and head straight for the ladder beside the lab entrance.
  8. Climb the ladder, continue straight, then take the second ladder down into the main lab area.
  9. Head into the lab and look left for a cart holding the disk.
  10. Grab the disk, then swim back up and head to the Ranger Station to turn it in.

Hazards Along the Route

Two threats show up on this route, and both are simple to avoid once you know where they sit.

  • Land bugs near the net: These can aggro as you cross the pole and net. Keep moving toward the bench instead of stopping to fight, and they will fall behind.
  • The Toe Biter at the lab entrance: This creature guards the doorway but does not need to be engaged. Swim past it toward the ladder as soon as you spot it, rather than closing the distance to fight.

What the Aquatic Optical Disk Unlocks

Turning the disk in at the Ranger Station unlocks the Diving Helmet, one of the key underwater gear pieces in Grounded 2, gating off a cluster of content tied to deeper water exploration.

Unlocked with Diving HelmetWhat it enables
The AbyssAccess to the deep-water area beyond the pond’s shallow zones
Croc CurseA specific underwater encounter tied to the Abyss content
Underwater BombA craftable tool used for underwater demolition or clearing
Underwater cookingCooking stations or recipes usable while submerged
Swim Sign SetA cosmetic build set themed around the pond and swim mechanics

Obsidian Entertainment’s official Grounded 2 site lists the current build as Into the Abyss 0.5.0.4, and names its headline content update after the same Abyss area this disk unlocks. Grab the disk on your first trip to the pond rather than turning back for it later, since everything in the table above stays locked until you do.

Ready to Gear Up for Deep Water

Once the Ranger Station has your disk and the Diving Helmet is equipped, head straight back to the pond and dive past the lab toward the Abyss entrance. From there, the Croc Curse encounter and the underwater crafting stations are the next stops worth checking, since both only open up once the helmet is on.

Example scenario: Say you arrive at the pond with a Gill Tube but no Fin Flops. You can still complete the dive, but the swim to the lab entrance takes noticeably longer, since Fin Flops are what make the descent brisk rather than just possible.

Example scenario: Say you are diving in a group and one player aggroes the Toe Biter by swimming too close to the entrance. The rest of the group can continue straight to the ladder while that player breaks off and swims past, since the Toe Biter does not block the doorway itself.

FAQs

What happens if I lose the Aquatic Optical Disk before I turn it in?

Check your backpack or death marker first, since dropped items in Grounded 2 typically stay where you fell rather than vanishing. If the disk does not carry over, swim back to the cart in the underwater lab and grab a second one rather than treating the loss as permanent.

Does the Diving Helmet only unlock the Abyss, or does it open up the whole pond?

The Diving Helmet specifically gates the Abyss and the gear tied to it, including the Underwater Bomb and underwater cooking. Shallower parts of the pond, including the route to the lab itself, only require the Gill Tube and Fin Flops, so you can reach those areas before turning in the disk.

What if I lose my Gill Tube or Fin Flops partway through the dive?

Resurface, repair or re-equip the missing gear, and restart from the net or lily pad rather than continuing without it. Carrying spare Fin Flops or repair materials in your inventory before you dive avoids a wasted trip back to the surface mid-route.

Do I need to grab my own disk in co-op, or does one pickup cover the whole group?

The Diving Helmet unlock is tied to each player’s individual progress rather than the shared world as a whole. If your group wants everyone equipped for the Abyss, plan on each player making their own trip to the cart instead of assuming one pickup covers the team.

Are there other Aquatic Optical Disks in Grounded 2 outside the pond?

Yes, other areas of Brookhollow Park gate their own gear behind similar disk pickups, following the same general pattern as this pond disk and its Diving Helmet unlock. Check MetaForge’s guides for Grounded 2 to find each area’s disk location and unlock as they are published.
